GUGGENHEIM The Thannhauser collection. From Van Gogh to Picasso | Milan from October 17th
3 Ottobre, 2019 - 3 Gennaio, 2020€6 - €14
The Guggenheim exhibition. The Thannhauser collection, from Van Gogh to Picasso scheduled at the Palazzo Reale from 17 October 2019 to 1 March 2020, presents about fifty masterpieces of the great impressionist, post-impressionist and avant-garde masters of the early twentieth century, including Paul Cézanne, Pierre -Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and an important nucleus of works by Pablo Picasso.
The exhibition tells the extraordinary collection that Justin K. Thannhauser built over the years and then donated it, in 1963, to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which has since exhibited it permanently in a section of the great New York museum.
Promoted and produced by the Municipality of Milan Culture, Palazzo Reale, MondoMostre Skira and organized in collaboration with The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, the exhibition is curated by Megan Fontanella, curator of modern art at the Guggenheim.
It is the first time that the most important masterpieces of the Guggenheim’s Thannhauser collection arrive in Europe: after the first stop at the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the second at the Hotel de Caumont in Aix-en-Provence, Palazzo Reale in Milan represents the final stage of the exhibition, after which these splendid works will return to New York. It is therefore a unique and unrepeatable occasion to admire works of exceptional quality of great masters of European painting ever exposed outside the United States.
If the Thannhauser Collection is therefore a jewel for the Guggenheim Museum which, mainly devoted to abstract art, had a small number of impressionist and post-impressionist works in the early 1960s, in turn the American museum with this exhibition pays homage to the great German collector bringing to Europe works of exceptional quality and of great importance in the creative journey of each artist.
“After living for five hundred years in Germany – declared Justin Thannhauser after losing his children and his first wife – my family is now extinct. This is why I want to donate my collection “. In 1963 with this philanthropic gesture “the work of my whole life finds its meaning”.
At the Guggenheim Museum this wonderful collection is admired every day by hundreds of Americans and tourists visiting the cult building by Frank Lloyd Wright; in Milan for some months these extraordinary works pay tribute again to the role of this family in the defense and promotion of European avant-garde artists for over half a century.
